Since the launce of Ohio in 1995 the number of non-commercial photography projects that take on the shape of a periodical publication has increased considerably. The periodical as a photographic platform is an established mode though appearing with a non-fixed interval between the issues. In most cases several photographers, image-makers and collectors of found photographs working in the documentary tradition take this initiative collectively. The ICM issue is one of those rare cases in which an institution chooses for this concept. Germany and the Netherlands are forerunners in this tendency. There is a high variety. In terms of design, content, looks and frequency of appearance differences are large. Useful Photography, Fw: Magazine, fotozine, Frau Böhm, Capricious (the latter missing sense of direction in terms of concept) and RE-magazine are exemplary for this category. Both renowned photographers and upcoming image-makers, which manifest themselves as editors and visual historians and cooperate based on like-mindedness and shared ideals regarding the emancipation of their profession, have a preference for this approach in photography.
